Two U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) officers are said to be injured, one critically, after reportedly being struck with with a car Friday afternoon. Capitol Police opened fire at the north barricade of the Capitol complex in response to the incident, law enforcement sources tell ABC News.
The USCP said in a tweet shortly before 1:30 p.m. ET that they were "responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers." They later corrected the tweet to "Constitution Avenue."
Federal officials tell ABC News that a vehicle occupied by "a single individual, the driver, sought to ram the north barrier at the Capitol.”
A suspect is in custody, the USCP said in their tweet, and both officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital. It's not yet known whether the ramming incident was intentional and, if so, what was the driver's motive.
Tuesday of next week will mark three months since the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, which resulted in five deaths, including a USCP officer.
