In between rock legends, including AC/DC's Brian Johnson, Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Queen's Brian May, pop star Kesha took the stage during Foo Fighters' epic tribute to late drummer Taylor Hawkins earlier this month. Speaking with NME, Kesha shares that she and the Foos have a long history.
"I'm sure I seemed like one of the more random choices to take part, but I've been friends with the band for ages," Kesha says.
That friendship began over a decade ago after Kesha first broke through with her 2009 hit single, "Tik Tok."
"I met [Foo Fighters] backstage at Madison Square Garden and I was definitely having some real imposter syndrome," Kesha recalls. "Taylor; his wife, Alison; Dave [Grohl] and Pat [Smear] all really took me under their wing and reassured me: 'You're good; you're home.'"
Kesha remembers another instance when she celebrated with the Foos at a Japan rock club the night her 2017 album, Rainbow, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
"They were always so supportive and made me feel so appreciated," Kesha says of the "Everlong" rockers. "I've always felt like a misfit, first in society, then in the pop world, but Taylor and the rest of the band were one of the few people that accepted me with open arms."
"That's why I wanted to be there [at the tribute concert], for whatever they needed," she adds. "Taylor was just a ray of light."
During the tribute, Kesha covered T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution" with Hawkins' side band Chevy Metal. She shares that she's "absolutely open" to recording a rock album herself, provided she had the "right band."
"[Performing during the tribute was] one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever been a part of in my life," she says.
