News of Chris Brown's canceled American Music Awards performance didn't sit too well with some artists. Among them, Destiny's Child's own Kelly Rowland.
The singer had quieted fans when they booed following Chris' win in the category of Favorite Male R&B Artist. At the time, she thanked him for "making great R&B music" and "being an incredible performer." "I'll take this award, bring it to you. I love you," she said. "Congratulations."
She doubled down on the support when TMZ stopped to ask her about the message she sent Chris at the AMAs. “I believe that grace is very real and we all need a dose of it," she said of her stance. As many recall, Chris was accused of physically assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
"Before we point fingers at anybody, we should realize how grateful we are for every moment that we get," she continued. "For even our own things that we have, I think it's important to remember to be human, we are humans."
Kelly added, "We all need to be forgiven for anything we could be doing, anything that we’re thinking. We all come up short in some sort of way. And grace is real. And we are humans, and everybody deserves grace. Period.”
Chris was tapped to perform at the 2022 AMAs with special guest Ciara, but the offer was reneged last minute for unknown reasons. Following criticism of the cancellation, a spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, which produces the show, said in a statement, “Live shows change all the time, it’s the nature of this business; unfortunately, this element of the AMAs didn’t come together as we couldn’t align on the performance, to no fault of Chris Brown.”
