Celebrations for the 50th anniversary of hip-hop are planned for throughout the year, but on the genre's actual birthday, the party will be at Yankee Stadium. Hip Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium will take place August 11, with performances from a variety of hip-hop stars. Included on the bill are Run-DMC, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, T.I., Fat Joe and Ghostface Killah.
The show will also feature a Queen of Hip Hop segment with performances from artists Eve, Lil' Kim, Remy Ma and Trina; a Pillars of Hip Hop portion with Kool Herc & Cindy Campbell, Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, Roxanne Shante, Scorpio and the Sugar Hill Gang; and a showcase featuring legendary DJs.
“I am honored to hit the stage in the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop and celebrate all of my heroes,” said Run in a statement.
“Aug 11th is Hip Hop’s 50th birthday! So…’Up in the Bronx’ where it all started we will be celebrating this historic moment in history!" DMC added. "I am honored to pay tribute to the culture that allowed this little shy kid from Queens to grow up and become The Mighty King of Rock! Thank you Hip Hop!!!”
Co-produced by Mass Appeal, Live Nation and Yankee Stadium, tickets for hip-hop's official birthday celebration are available via presale June 8 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET. The general on-sale begins June 9 at 10 a.m. ET.
