Producer Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II has seen nothing but success these past few months. In March, he won a Grammy for producing H.E.R.'s single, "I Can't Breathe," which won Song of The Year. Then Sunday, he won an Oscar for producing H.E.R.'s other single, "Fight for You," which won Best Original Song for its inclusion in Judas and the Black Messiah.
D-Mile tells ABC Audio, "Those two songs came maybe a little easier than people may think, than usual. It really was just stuff that came from my heart and to see the result of it is amazing."
D'Mile says H.E.R's team "specifically" requested him to produce the song for Judas and The Black Messiah, directed and co-written by Shaka King.
"They specifically sought me out. I think they called me the day before and the next day I pulled up on them and that's how I found out what the situation was," D'Mile explains. "Shaka and all the other directors were looking -- for specifically, what it seemed like -- for H.E.R to come up with something for the movie."
"And in talking, she kind of knew what the direction was that they were looking for. They didn't want anything sad and all that," D'Mile continues.
He recalls working on "Fight for You" just "30 minutes" after watching the film with H.E.R. and the song's co-composer, Grammy-winning songwriter Tiara Thomas.
"It was like all the emotions were right there. It wasn't like, 'Ok, we're gonna leave and come back to it the next day and try to write to it,'" D'Mile says. "And I think that's why it worked because we were right there, in that same moment."
