Black Veil Brides' new album The Phantom Tomorrow includes the band's highest-charting radio single, "Scarlett Cross," which ended up peaking in the top 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. As for why that particular song took off, frontman Andy Biersack tells ABC Audio that your guess is as good as his.
"All of us feel like there's 12 songs on every record that should be a big hit...because you're making it," Biersack says. "So the closeness that you have the material prohibits you from maybe seeing it with the outside optics."
That being said, Biersack admits that "Scarlett Cross" felt "special right away."
"I don't often share demos with the label right when we're writing a song," Biersack explains. "I was very excited right when we got the demo done for that one and I sent that one off to the label and said, 'I think this is really special,' and they were immediately pumped."
He quips, "In terms of signs, that's a pretty good one."
Seeing "Scarlet Cross" continue its climb, was, of course, very exciting for BVB.
"It's extraordinarily validating to be working on this kind of big concept record with these ideas that you believe in as a band, and then to see that the first single off of that record is really successful for you, I mean, it's exactly what you want," Biersack says.
"Scarlet Cross'" ascent also came during a crucial time in the recording process for what would become The Phantom Tomorrow.
"At the time that we released 'Scarlet Cross,' we weren't done with the record," Biersack recalls. "So it was informative for us on how to move forward, because you go, 'Well, what we're doing is working, let's just keep going down this path.'"
