The Black Keys' Patrick Carney has shared a tribute to late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away Tuesday at age 80.
In a piece for Rolling Stone, Carney recalls when The Black Keys joined the Stones onstage for a performance of the Bo Diddley song "Who Do You Love?" during a 2012 concert in Newark, New Jersey.
As Carney tells it, he usually goes into "caveman-brain mode" when he's playing drums, but during the performance, he was distracted by Keys frontman Dan Auerbach and Stones guitarist Keith Richards "playing back-to-back, causing him to "hit this flubbed note and [turn] the snare beat around."
"Unless you were a drummer, you wouldn't have known what was happening," Carney explains. "I looked at Charlie and he looked at me like, 'You're not supposed to do that.' But he had his huge smile."
"He knew what I'd done, and he thought it was funny," Carney adds. "He might have been the coolest dude ever play to play rock & roll."
