Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello is set to receive the Spirit of John Brown Freedom Award.

The honor, named after the famed abolitionist who led the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, is given out by the organization John Brown Lives! in recognition of individuals whose "work invokes the passion and conviction" of Brown, and "celebrates leaders and innovators in civil and human rights whose courage, creativity, and commitment are models for others to follow."

"Tom is widely known as a barrier breaking guitarist who continues to push the limits and prove the transformative power of music," the organization says. "With his guitar leading the way, he continues to create powerful alloys of different genre."

The Spirit of John Brown Freedom Award will be presented to Morello on John Brown Day, May 14, in Lake Placid, New York. Other honorees include graphic design artist Karen Davidson Seward and dance artistic director Tiffany Rea-Fisher.
