Brandy says starring in 'Queens' is the role she's been waiting for: "It's all divine"

Brandy has enjoyed a variety of film roles in her 29-year career, including starring in Cinderella with her idol, the late Whitney Houston, and in Double Platinum with Diana Ross. Her television series have included Moesha, The Game and Star. Now, the versatile singer/actress says she's found her ultimate role in the ABC series Queens.

Brandy remembers she could barely control her excitement when she was offered the role of Naomi in the show about former music stars hoping to rediscover their past success.

"My heart was pumping because I've always wanted to do television where I can do everything that I can do in one role," she tells MadameNoire. "I loved Broadway. I love the way I felt there. So, I wanted to do that on television. I was already in before I read the script. Now I am in this group that encompasses hip hop and singing. It's all divine."

In 1999, Brandy and Monica won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for their hit "The Boy Is Mine." In August 2020, the two singers battled on Verzuz, and it was an experience Brandy says she will never forget.

"I didn't know who was going to watch and what people were going to think. I just knew that it was a celebration and it wasn't about being competitive," Brandy says.

"I was so down to do it and Monica was too. When I first approached Monica for 'The Boy Is Mine' it was because I was a fan and I wanted to work with her," she remembers. "That's the spirit in which the song was created. I wanted the Verzuz to feel the same way. I had a great time that night. I didn't want it to end."
