Serj Tankian has released Disarming Time: A Modern Piano Concerto, a 24-minute classical music composition.
"When quarantine hit and all our projects and releases were canceled, I started itching for a musical challenge," the System of a Down frontman explains. "One night sitting in bed looking through different voice memos on the iPhone I realized I have this huge trove of short, special, unrealized musical ideas."
"Right then the thought of creating an epic piece utilizing them all made me smile," he continues. "So I recorded them all and started arranging the instrumentation to create this incredibly unique musical experience. I mean, who the f*** listens to 24 minutes of music as one piece today? We're about to find out."
You can download Disarming Time in all of its 24-minute glory now via digital outlets. It's also streaming in full alongside a video accompaniment on YouTube.
Additionally, Tankian has also announced Cool Gardens Poetry Suite, which finds him reciting poems from his 2002 book, Cool Gardens, over selections from Disarming Time, along with additional "cinematic compositions."
Cool Gardens Poetry Suite will be released July 9.
Tankian has already had a busy year, with the release of his EP Elasticity and his documentary Truth to Power. System of a Down, meanwhile, returned with two new songs last fall -- "Protect the Land" and "Genocidal Humanoidz" -- marking the band's first fresh release in 15 years.
