Big Daddy Kane talks TV One's 'Bad Dad Rehab: The Next Session' and how he channeled his deadbeat dad role

TV One has tapped hip hop heavyweight Big Daddy Kane as part of the new class of "bad dads" in the Bad Dad Rehab sequel, Bad Dad Rehab: The Next Session.

Similar to the first film, The Next Session follows a group of deadbeat fathers who end up changing their ways after getting some much needed counseling. Kane tells ABC Audio that stepping into the role of Owen -- a negligent father trying to create a relationship with his daughter after 30 years -- was a new and exciting experience for him.

"Well, I thought that emotional side to it was something unique that I felt was a challenge that I wanted to pull off," he says. " And I love the writing as well."

While tapping into a more vulnerable side allowed Kane to sharpen his acting skills, he says he didn't have to do too much to understand Owen's situation -- even if it wasn't his own.

"I was raised in a household with my mother and my father, and they stayed married until my mother passed, so I didn't grow up in a broken home. But, I have a lot of friends who did," Kane explains. "And, I remember those conversations, and a lot of them would be them telling me, 'You're lucky you got both your parents.' So I could definitely relate."

TV One's Bad Dad Rehab: The Next Session, also starring Lamman Rucker, Blue Kimble, Onyekwere Eme-Akwari and Carlo Mendez, premieres on Sunday, June 20 at 8 p.m. ET. Check out a preview clip from the film at the network's official YouTube channel.
